Prostate cancer is actually a treatable kind of the disease. Many patients diagnosed with this kind of cancer survive their ordeal because of two things: the early detection of the malignant cells in their prostate and the combination of the treatments that are used.
The early detection of prostate cancer is important because it is in the early stages that the malignant cells are still controllable. They are still low in number and the damage they have done is still minimal. Performing surgery and chemotherapy may still guarantee complete elimination of the cells. On the other hand, if the disease is detected on its advanced stage, recovery is slimmer. Hence, there is a need to employ more aggressive treatment options.
There are several advanced prostate cancer treatment options that a patient can use. These treatments may be more like the ones administered to prostate cancer in its early stages. It can consist of surgery, chemotherapy and even radiation treatment. Continue reading ‘Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment Options’ »

Prostate cancer is a malignant type of cancer which develops primarily in the prostate, a gland found in the male reproductive system which produces fluids that form part of semen to protect sperm. Most prostate cancers tend to be slow growing; however, cases of aggressive prostate cancers are also present. The malignant cells may spread from the prostate to other parts of the body, predominantly the bones and lymph nodes.
This malignant tumor is considered as the third most common cause of death to men of all ages who are experiencing cancer and is the most common reason of death from cancer in men over 75 years old. It can be successfully treated if it is discovered early.

The HIFU procedure is minimally invasive and utilizes a transrectal probe to guarantee total focus of all ultrasound waves onto the prostate and the targeted location. The Sonablate 500 elevates temperature, causing the breakdown of tissue along the prostate. After two to four hours, the procedure is done and the patient can leave the hospital. The advantages associated with the Sonablate 500 for HIFU are numerous and it is therefore considered the most widely used HIFU treatments available.
The Sonablate 500 procedure is an out-patient one, meaning that there is no required hospital stay. There is no need for surgery and it only uses invasive procedures that do not cause harm to the individual. Due to the probe and transducer focal length design, the Sonablate 500 provides a full therapy zone of up to 120 degrees. With this enlarged zone, physicians have the capability necessary to gain quick access to the entire prostate gland without repositioning the probe.

There are some clear factors that help men determine whether or not they are at risk for developing prostate cancer. While some of these factors may be influenced by lifestyle choices, others simply cannot be avoided. Knowing the risks for prostate cancer helps men understand the need for routine screenings.
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system that makes and stores a component of semen. It is located in front of the rectum and just under the bladder. This gland surrounds the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder. A healthy prostate is about the size of a walnut.

Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate gland. The prostate is a small, walnut-sized structure which wraps around the urethra making up the part of a man’s reproductive system which produces a fluid that makes up part of semen. Generally, a tumor grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. During this time, the tumor produces little to no symptoms or outward signs. Some aggressive types of this cancer grow and spread more rapidly than others and can cause a significant shortening of life expectancy in men affected by them.
This type of cancer is the most common malignancy in American men and the second leading cause of deaths from cancer, after lung cancer. It is the most common cause of death from cancer in men over age 75. Prostate cancer is rarely found in men younger than 40. According to the American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates, 217,730 new cases of prostate cancer would be diagnosed in 2010 and 32,050 would die from the disease. Prostate Cancer (PC) is one of the most common diseases which has been “hitting” men aged 50 and above. It’s exact causes are unknown, yet there have been noted contributing factors which have been pointed out by some research as they have allegedly been affecting how cancer cells tend to spread and grow. These are:
Age. Men over 50 are at risk of Prostate Cancer and the risk correspondingly increases with age. This doesn’t mean though that men aged below 50 are safe from this disease. They too can get it but the probability is lower compared to those aged 50 above.

How do we detect Prostate Cancer? The following are the most popular diagnostic procedures used by medical practitioners.
Digital Rectal Examination (DRE). The doctor touches the thin wall of the rectum to check for abnormalities in the prostate. As simple as it is, this seems to be the least reliable among the prostate tests, since only a part of the gland will be tested, thus, the result would not really speak for situation of the whole gland.
