Prostate cancer is actually a treatable kind of the disease. Many patients diagnosed with this kind of cancer survive their ordeal because of two things: the early detection of the malignant cells in their prostate and the combination of the treatments that are used.

The early detection of prostate cancer is important because it is in the early stages that the malignant cells are still controllable. They are still low in number and the damage they have done is still minimal. Performing surgery and chemotherapy may still guarantee complete elimination of the cells. On the other hand, if the disease is detected on its advanced stage, recovery is slimmer. Hence, there is a need to employ more aggressive treatment options.

There are several advanced prostate cancer treatment options that a patient can use. These treatments may be more like the ones administered to prostate cancer in its early stages. It can consist of surgery, chemotherapy and even radiation treatment. Continue reading ‘Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment Options’ »

The HIFU procedure is minimally invasive and utilizes a transrectal probe to guarantee total focus of all ultrasound waves onto the prostate and the targeted location. The Sonablate 500 elevates temperature, causing the breakdown of tissue along the prostate. After two to four hours, the procedure is done and the patient can leave the hospital. The advantages associated with the Sonablate 500 for HIFU are numerous and it is therefore considered the most widely used HIFU treatments available.

The Sonablate 500 procedure is an out-patient one, meaning that there is no required hospital stay. There is no need for surgery and it only uses invasive procedures that do not cause harm to the individual. Due to the probe and transducer focal length design, the Sonablate 500 provides a full therapy zone of up to 120 degrees. With this enlarged zone, physicians have the capability necessary to gain quick access to the entire prostate gland without repositioning the probe.

Breast Cancer is the cancer that develops in the breast tissues mostly in the inner lining of milk ducts or in the lobules which supply milk to the ducts. Depending on the place of origination, they are known as ductal carcinoma, if originated in the milk ducts or lobular carcinoma when originated in the lobules. Breast cancers are also classified as hormone-positive or a hormone-negative cancer which is decided based on their sensitivity to hormones like progesterone and estrogen.

The options available for breast cancer treatment depend on the type of breast cancer and the staging results. Staging is the process in which the disease spread and its progressive extend is determined. Though it is the most common non-skin type of cancer in women and is considered one of the fatal types of cancer, there are many advanced breast cancer treatment options which can help cure this disease if detected early.

Breast Cancer Treatment Plan

Once the cancer has been diagnosed, the doctors evaluate the pathology report and form a plan that would suit the type of cancer and the stage to which the disease has progressed. Treatment modes aim at reducing the spread of the disease, destruction of the diseased cells and reduction of chances for re-occurrence in future. The doctors would choose a single or a set of treatment options based on the patient’s medical conditions which they may evaluate periodically. It is important to know that FDA today unanimously recommended that Avastin should no longer be used to treat Breast Cancer, saying that the risks of the drug far outweighed any benefits. The recommendation was made after an attack by officials from the agency’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research on Genentech’s plan for a new confirmatory study.

Genentech’s proposed study of Avastin (bevacizumab) in combination with paclitaxel in first-line metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) does not justify continued approval of the indication because the trial is unlikely to substantiate the magnitude of progression-free survival benefit seen in the E2100 trial and there are multiple factors that could delay the new study’s completion, said the director of the division of biologic oncology products, Dr. Patricia Keegan.
